Indonesia Mengglobal: Welcome Editorial

In the last decades, modernization has pushed the world to be increasingly borderless. No longer should we see nationalism with a narrow point of view, nor should we be too quick to ignore the good things that other countries offer, dismissing them as contrary to our culture. Instead, we should take the time to take advantage of them where we see fit, while treasuring and not losing sight of what’s good within our own communities.

A big part of what globalization offers is education. Overseas education is not necessarily better than local education, but it does certainly offer students unique learning experiences. Studying abroad gives students opportunities to broaden their perspectives, be more independent and develop their confidence. It leads students to think and solve problems differently, while opening a whole new door of future opportunities. Overseas education will bring even more diversity to leadership in Indonesia by nurturing young leaders with deep, first-hand understanding and appreciation of the state of the world.

As Indonesian students who have experienced the benefits of education in the United States, we strongly believe in the benefits of global education. It therefore saddens us to see the lack of free and extensive information to Indonesian students about how to access global education – be it the U.S., the U.K., Australia, and many other countries.

Indonesia Mengglobal” is our attempt to address this problem, by connecting students curious about global education with Indonesian students and alumni in those universities. Through this blog, we will share our experience in applying and studying abroad, while trying to support you in your application process. We will highlight different universities every week and share tips on writing your personal statements or finding scholarships or other aspects in global education, both in undergraduate and graduate level. We will start by focusing on applying for and education in U.S. universities, and later on, we will gauge your interest to see whether we should expand to other countries as well.

This blog is meant to be a joint effort of Indonesian students and alumni abroad. If you are studying or have studied abroad, please consider contributing by filling out this form. You can write about any aspects of global education that we have not covered – be it your college / university, your interesting experience abroad, greek life, tips on application process, or how your education affect your after-school experience.

We look forward to reading your thoughts! Next week, stay tuned for Kevin Soedyatmiko’s study experience at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Martin Tjioe (Stanford University)’s guide to research assistantship in the US.

    Thanks for the information.

    • When I was at UIUC (Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), there was a visiting professor (musicology/gamelan) from Bali, and he did teach gamelans/Balinese music for a few semesters.
